Manaiakalani Film Festival – Better Together

Have you ever played a sports game all by yourself? It can be really hard! But when you ask a friend to help, something amazing happens. Suddenly, the hard parts become easier, and it’s way more fun! That’s teamwork. It’s about sharing your ideas and helping each other out. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the sports field, or just playing with friends, working together helps us do things we could never do alone. Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable. So remember to team up. Because together, we are always stronger!

Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea faka-Tonga

This week is Tongan Language Week. Room 6 looked at the different art and began the processes of making a class ngatu. We also did a research presentation to discover the beauty of Tongan culture. During lunchtimes, there were also different activities that some of the teachers in the school put together – Tokelau feletoa, Ribbon kahoa making and sports.

Room 6 learnt how to make Ribbon kahoa, as well as some kiekie. Take a look at some of the things we created this week!

White Bait Connections: Ōmaru Stream

Room 6 had their session at Ōmaru Stream. In this session, we were split into three groups where we learnt different things. The first group got to test the water in the stream. Janie took our lesson where we got to see if the water was up to standard. Another volunteer took the second group. They used water from the stream and we had to look for the animals and bugs we learnt about in our in class session. There was even magnifying glasses so that we could get a closer look at them. Our last group was taken by Kate. She took us further along the stream to show us what White Bait has been doing for the streams in the community, and we even got to venture out to see if there was tuna.

We had a lot of fun at this stream. Thank you to White Bait Connections, Kate and Janie for another great stream session! Thank you also to our helpers Andrew and Mr Toa.

White Bait Connections: Boundary East Reserve

Room 6 had their session at Boundary East Reserve. In this session, we were split into two groups where we learnt different things. The first group got to test the water in the creek. Kate took our lesson where we got to see if the water was up to standard. Janie took the other group. They used water from the creek and we had to look for the animals and bugs we learnt about in our in class session. There was even magnifying glasses so that we could get a closer look at them!

We had heaps of fun. Thank you to White Bait Connections, Kate and Janie. Thank you also to our helpers Miss Dickinson and Mr Uati!

Te Reo Māori Kūki ‘Airani

This week was Cook Islands Language Week. Room 6 went celebrated by learning small phrases and completing a research presentation to discover how beautiful the Cook Islands culture is.

We also made ‘ai katu out of paper. First we made a band to fit our heads, then we cut out different shapes for our flowers, and then we put them altogether.

White Bait Connections: In Class Session

Team 4 has been busy with White Bait Connections. We had two lovely ladies, Kate and Janey, come in to take sessions about what is being found in the creeks in our community. First, we talked about what is being found in the different body’s of water in New Zealand. We even got to see life-size plushy eels at different stages in their life. Our classes got split in two groups where we were taken for seperate sessions. We started off with a clear jar of water, and as Kate read a story, children in the class took turns adding things into the jar. From here, we could see how our creeks have started getting polluted.

Next week, we have a session at Boundary Reserve. We can’t wait to see what we are going to get up to!

Life Education with Harold and Sylvia

This past week, we have had two sessions of Life Education. We spoke about nurturing our Te Whare Tapa Wha. We also spoke about our feelings towards different situations. Sylvia introduced different zones that we may be feeling, and said that it was okay to feel any way we want to, as long as we know how to control it. Thank you for having us, and thank you Harold for the visit!
